Abstract

Objective: To determine the experience, prevalence and severity of dental caries, and to establish the treatment needs and care index for the primary dentition of children aged 6 and 7 years. Material and Methods: This cross sectional study comprised 357 schoolchildren from Campeche City, Mexico. Decayed, indicated for extraction / extracted and missing teeth index (dmft index) was used to determine the experience of dental caries and also to calculate the prevalence (dmft > 0), severity (dmft ≥4) as well as the treatment needs index (TNI) and the care index (CI). Questionnaires were used to identify sociodemographic, socioeconomic and oral health behaviors. Data were analyzed with a binary logistic regression model. Results: The overall dmft index was 2.29 ± 2.95 The prevalence and severity of caries were 52.4% and 29 1%, respectively. The percentage of TNI was 88.1%, while the CI was 11.4%. A negative attitude towards oral health (OR = 2.32, 95% CI 1.36-3.94) and visits to the dentist in the year prior to the study (OR = 1.93, 95% CI 1.44-2.54) were associated with caries prevalence. Conclusions: More than half of the schoolchildren had caries in primary dentition. There was a high percentage of carious lesions requiring treatment. We note that the attitude of the mother to the child's oral health had a degree of influence on the prevalence of caries in primary dentition. Strategies to improve the oral health of schoolchildren need to be designed and implemented
