In recent years there has been growing evidence concerning the close relation between eating habits and the development of malignant tumors. While in the past the focus was mainly on potentially carcinogenic substances in our food, the interest is now shifting towards preventive food ingredients. The discovery of micronutrients with hormone like effects (phytoestrogens) brings up a completely new perspective in the dietary prevention of cancer, especially when hormone-dependant cancers are concerned. An interdisciplinary advisory group of the German Cancer Society has now undertaken the task to transform the multitude of knowledge concerning the close relation between dietary factors and hormone-dependant malignancies into an applicable prevention programme. The NCP-Programme (Nutritional Cancer Prevention) is being introduced and discussed in this article.
