Evidence for pion absorption on four nucleons

Abstract

Experimental spectra from the coincident detection of three nucleons after the pion absorption in 4He are displayed. The presence of a mechanism with four nucleons participating in the absorption process is made obvious. The total cross-sections for this absorption mode are: σ4NAabs = (1.0 ± 0.2) mb at TΠ = 120 MeV and σ4NAabs = (2.18 ± 0.65) mb at TΠ = 210 MeV.
