Expression of pituitary hormone mRNAS in the Xenopus oocyte

Abstract

The Xenopus L. oocyte is capable of expressing foreign proteins and correctly carrying out post-translational modification. It is also capable of directing proteins into the correct intracellular and cytoplasmic compartments. Many foreign proteins synthesized in oocytes acquire native activity. To apply the Xenopus oocyte expression system in studying neuroendocrine peptides, we successfully expressed pituitary hormones in the Xenopus oocyte by microinjection. This provides an useful tool for studying their biological function and production.
