Chronic “benign” pain costs the taxpayer millions of dollars annually. Part of the problem is created by the lack of commitment the health care delivery system is willing to take to make acute pain a priority of care. We will discuss an assessment process useful for acute and chronic pain. The neurosurgical approaches to chronic, nonmalignant pain will also be outlined as well.
