In this issue of Blood, Aprile and colleagues demonstrate that in b-thalassemia hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are impaired due to defective interaction with the bone marrow microenvironment (BME), a defect that can be rescued by administration of parathyroid hormone (PTH).
