The bioengineering of changing lifestyle and wearable technology: A mini review

Abstract

Introduction: Chronic diseases are a major health concern at the national and global level. According to the CDC, 86% of US health dollars go toward the treatment of chronic diseases. Many chronic diseases are manageable or preventable if individuals make appropriate lifestyle choices. Wearable technology-both consumer and medical-provides a unique opportunity to track lifestyle choices, such as increasing physical activity. It is estimated the market for consumer wearables will grow from $9.2 billion in 2014 to $30 billion by 2018. With such a potential market growth, it is important to understand the potential benefits and limitations of wearable technology to impact chronic disease management and prevention. Methods: To develop that understanding, a literature search using the following data bases was conducted: CINAHL, EMBASE, Global Health, Google Scholar, IEEE-Explore, MedlinePlus, Physical Education Index, and PyscINFO. We used the following search terms within the context of "biosensors," "wearable devices," "wearable sensors," and "wearable technology": chronic disease, diabetes, fall prevention, lifestyle, heart rate variability, physical activity, and stress management. Conclusion: There is significant interest in wearable technology for health management from a wide diversity of professions, including engineering, nursing, medicine, physical education, and psychology.
