Abstract

This study was performed to determine the nature, sequence, and timing of major developmental events in the morphogenesis of the trachea and lung primordia. It is a survey of fetal development in one species, the rat. Scanning electron microscopy has been used to demonstrate three-dimensional relationships during the early events of organogenesis and to assess developmental changes in cell surface characteristics during the fetal differentiation of the tracheal mucociliary epithelium.
