Abstract

To the Editor: We were interested to read the article by Dr. Boyko et al. (March 19 issue)1 on nonsmoking or former smoking and ulcerative colitis, and wish to draw attention to the following points. First, the authors state, “none of the previous studies on smoking and ulcerative colitis focused on the influence of former smoking on the incidence of this disease….” This statement is untrue since our earlier study2 (cited by Boyko et al.) did consider former smoking quite extensively.
